"Without doubt, the Bible, which is the word of God, is the greatest source of information that can positively aid our moral and spiritual development. Though it is a perennial best-seller, too many of our young people are growing up without a useful knowledge of its contents. The Secondary School Bible Quiz is here to provide an avenue and tangible benefits to excite increased reading of this all-important book among the youth. We trust more will grasp it." Joel H. Benefit
In Matthew 16:26, Jesus asks the question, "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" In economic terms, this can be seen as a simple cost-benefit analysis. Human beings are the highest, most complex and enduring of God's creation, made in his image and likeness. Physical death is not the end of our existence.
For every student, parent and teacher, reading has and will continue to play a great part in the quality of the education received and delivered, which will in turn contribute to the improvement of our lives. However, as Jesus' question suggests, the financial benefit of any activity is for nought if it comes at the cost of one's own soul. For a young person to develop holistically, adequate attention must be placed on the intellectual, emotional, social, physical, creative, moral and spiritual aspects of his or her life.
